Friday Book — “Merciful Flush” by Lance Manion
it isn’t often that I pick up a book and feel that it’s so wrong and yet so right. That was my feeling after finishing “Merciful Flush” by Lance Manion. The author describes it as ” a short story collection culled from my 5 years of blogging”. They are very interesting stories, and I mean that in the best possible way. The stories all have a certain amount of quirkiness and snark that makes them fun to read. In a way, this book took me back to the Jack Handy shorts they used to run on Saturday Night Live in the 90’s. It has a lot of the same feel as those skit did, which I liked.
An example is from the very first story, where the author comes across a couple whose dog was just killed by an automobile. If you can think of the wrong things to say in that particular situation, he says it. I get the feel that the narrator is trying to be helpful, but just doesn’t get that he’s being anything but. It made me laugh and think, “Did he just say that?”
These stories were fun to read and I can see myself turning back to them again when I’m having a particularly down day and need a quick pick me up. My rating for this book is a 4 out of 5.
The book is available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble or ordered through your local book store. You can also check out Lance’s website for more information on the book and for his more recent blog posts.
